Couponing is all the rage for many moms. There is the possibility of saving anywhere from
a few dollars each to week to 75%+ on your grocery bills. I can't think of one person who
doesn't want to save money. The problem that many people have with hitting that next level
of saving is either time or organization or both. In talking to many moms, frustration is a
common theme. Some moms are frustrated with not being able to find a sale item that
has been posted on a list. Some are frustrated with a coupon that was listed on a post not
being in their inserts. Some are frustrated with not having their coupons sorted and
organized. Some are frustrated with trying to figure out when to stockpile what. Some are
frustrated to find an item on sale that wasn't listed so they didn't bring a coupon to match.
The list is really endless. So I figured I would cover a few things that hopefully will help
keep you sane while saving money. Disclaimer - I am not an extreme couponer. I am not a
coupon queen. I am not that organized.
Here are some things to keep in mind that I think will help everyone.
There are unlimited numbers of tutorials out there as to how to coupon, how to get started
and how to organize your coupons. How to coupon is kind of a universal thing. The goal is
to get an item for the least amount of money possible. This is done by waiting for it to go
on sale at the lowest price it is going to be. (usually when it's buy one, get one free) Then
you use the best coupon you can find for that item to get it for even less money. And finally,
in a perfect world, you buy enough of that item to last you until it is at that price again.
(roughly 6 weeks for most items) In order to do this, you need to know what a good price
for each item is and how often they go on sale at that price. Lists like these can also be
found on the internet, but even so, try to keep a running list for your family and your area.
Even with no coupons, if you "stockpile" each thing when it's at its lowest price, you will
save a nice chunk of change for your family.
As far as getting your coupons organized, no one method works for everyone. Again, there
are plenty of videos and articles out there. Personally, I keep my coupons clipped and in a
binder but they are organized by the week they came out. I also try to keep a list in the front
of my binder of what coupons came out each week for Columbia. This is extremely helpful
because MOST sales/coupons list available are for large regions and every city gets
slightly different coupons. So, you may have a $2 off coupon listed on a site but Columbia
only got a coupon for $1 off. It's beyond annoying to get your list ready, be super excited for
an awesome deal only to find you don't have that one coupon that makes it a super sweet
deal. Or maybe that's just me.
And in a perfect world, the best way to decide what you are going to buy each week is to
look over your grocery store's ads to see which items are at the best price and then
compare them with the coupons you have. Sounds simple enough, but it can take quite a
bit to go through each item and to go through all of your coupons. This is where people
with OCD and a love of spreadsheets would been in their element. For the rest of us, we
often go to a website that compiles a list for their readers. These lists can be amazing and
a huge time saver! But always remember, these lists are for large audiences across many
cities. And no one is perfect. There are going to be errors although they do try to catch and
fix them. Not everything on sale is going to be listed in a store's ad. And not everything is
going to be exactly perfect for your area.
That being said, with the help of a few other women, I am going to attempt a test run of
posting what I am buying and what coupons are in The State newspaper. If this helps even
one mom save some money, then I consider it a win. If there is a specific super deal you
know of, feel free to post it on our Facebook page and share with other moms! Also, let me
know if you'd be interested in a couponing class. Wish us luck! (And please remember, I
am not perfect either.)
Since it's Sunday, we'll start off with this week's coupons ... This would be a good thing to
keep in the front of your binder. It's probably easiest to copy and paste it into a Word
document then print.
