As much as I fuss about having to be
out the door early on Mondays,
Wednesdays and Fridays, I LOVE me
some
Stroller Strides and Judy Shriner!
I get a fabulous work out with my
youngest in tow. She gets social time
with other children. She sees Mama
setting a good example. We sing songs
with the kids and count with them during
the work out. We both get some
sunshine. I don't have to leave her in a
gym child care center. I get to meet and
hang out with some awesome moms.
And, there's a level of accountability in
knowing that people will miss me if I
were to stay home watching TV. That's
the short list of the pros.
Stroller Strides is a fitness programs for moms (or dads, nannies, other
caregivers) that you can do with your child tagging along. They recommend
children be 6 wks to ... well, really as long as your child enjoys hanging out in
a stroller. It combines power walking or running (I walk) with toning exercises
using resistance bands, strollers and what's convenient. Judy does a
wonderful job of explaining the toning exercises and helping with your form
every time. By the time we are done, we've had 5 minutes of warm-up, 45 of
walking and toning and 10 minutes of abs and cool down. We've also walked
approximately 1.5 miles and worked out multiple muscle groups. For every
exercise, different progressions are shown so you can work at your level and
at your pace. No two moms are going to be in the same place physically. Even
though I may grumble and have possibly glared once or twice during class, it's
a fantastic work out and Judy does a wonderful job! She has a knack for
knowing when to be pushy, when to remind you to work at your pace and is
always supportive.
When Judy became a mom, she
found she needed a better support
system of experienced moms and
other new moms. She also saw how
easy it is to get in the pattern of not
leaving the house as much. Always
having been an active person,
opening a
Stroller Strides franchise
in Columbia seemed to be a perfect
way to help lots of moms with these
struggles and more.
Stroller Strides partners with LUNA to sponsor
LUNA Mom's Clubs. You do not have to be a
member of Stroller Strides to be a part of
LUNA
Mom's club and it is FREE! Every Wednesday,
there is a play group for moms and kids. They
also host a monthly Mom's Night Out. In the
works are a Family Dinner Night and community
service project. It's a great way to meet other
moms, have social activities for the kids and
expand your support system and circle of friends!
Your first class is free! Class information can
be found below. You should also know that
there are three "Founding Mom" Spots left. If
you move quickly to grab one, your registration
fee is waived. It's normally $75 and you receive
a set of bands, t-shirt and other goodies. To
be a "Founding Mom", like the Facebook page
and sign up for the monthly membership, which
is $50 for unlimited classes.
Personally, I couldn't be happier with joining Stroller Strides. For the first time
in quite a while, I am working out on a regular basis. It's because I can do it
with my little girl and because I know someone will notice if I'm not there. I
don't have to worry about how to keep her entertained while I work out or
leave her with a sitter or in a gym child care center while I go to the gym.  She
loves it! (And I am not a gym person but that's a neurotic story for another
day.)

I also know that I AM going to class on Monday, Wednesday and Friday not
only because I want to, but even when I'm not really feeling it, I know someone
will notice if I'm not there. I'm not just another person in a gym. And I'm not all
alone in the living room. I'm working out with other moms who understand what
my body's been through and women who aren't going to judge me for not
running or for not making it through all the crunches. And with women who
notice and cheer me on when I'm doing something I normally don't do.

I also feel better after class and in general. Yes, I fuss about being sore and
sweaty. Even with my fussing, I have more energy and just all around feel
better and stronger. I know that's repetitive but I don't know how to explain it.
Physically and mentally, things are just better.

Stroller Strides is a fabulous program that I hope you all will come try! Like
you've heard me so MANY times. You have to take care of you so you can
take care of everyone else. Do this for you! I'd love to see y'all at class soon.

Oh and I've heard a rumor there will be some Saturday classes soon!

*Update: There WILL be a Saturday Class on December 3rd at 9:30 at
Archer's Lake! Yay!
